The program will feature:
* A conversation with Morgan Brown, Assistant Deputy Secretary, Office of Innovation and Improvement, U.S. Department of Education, about the importance of informing parents and students of their education options under No Child Left Behind and engaging parents in decisions about their children's education; improving the quality of education given to all of America’s children-especially underserved and disadvantaged students-through increased options such as charter schools and opportunity scholarships; and, key programs and initiatives the Department promotes to empower parents in guiding their children toward academic success.
* A dialogue with two award-winning charter school principals--Dr. Lawrence Hernandez, Cesar Chavez Academy, and Jorge Miranda, MATCH Public Charter High School--about the good work they are doing in Pueblo, Colorado and Boston, Massachusetts to provide parents with high-performing school options and to raise low-income student achievement in math, reading, science, writing and other core subject areas.
* A discussion with Beverly Raimondo, Director, Center for Parent Leadership at the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence; Jacqueline Garvey, Executive Director, Indiana Partnerships Center; and Hedy Lemar-Walls, Director, Office of Family Engagement at the Minneapolis Public Schools about parent leadership and engagement at local schools and school districts; the kinds of questions parents should ask of teachers and school administrators at the beginning of every school year; and how parents effectively advocate for their children’s success throughout the school year.
* Video case study of two high-performing charter schools working to close the achievement gap among students in Pueblo, Colorado and Boston, Massachusetts; a video showcase of parent leadership and involvement practices in the state of Maryland; and a short back-to-school video message from the Maryland State Principal of the Year.
