Instructional
Broadcast Resources for K-12
There are
over 350 ITV series in all curricula areas and for varying grade
levels. Descriptions of these free resources can be accessed
in the online ITV Resources book.
For example: Project Discovery is
an interactive field trip produced by ITV with ETV that allows
students to visit places and talk to experts and historians
around our state. On October 5, 2005 Project Discovery
will visit the SC State Museum to highlight the new exhibit,
Norman Rockwell’s America. Students will have
the opportunity to call in toll free from 1:00 – 2:00
p.m. to talk to the museum’s lead curators of art and
history. One of the main focuses will be Rockwell’s creation
of “The Four Freedoms,” which he did in 1941 after
hearing President Roosevelt speak. Designed for students in
grades 3-12, this program will not only showcase the art, but
talk about history and how students create their own art every
day.

StreamlineSC
Provided
by ETV in partnership with the State Department of Education
and the K-12 Technology Initiative, StreamlineSC is the new
video-on-demand service that is free for educators and students.
This is just a new way to deliver instructional video-based
content that teachers can access easily.
For example: With over 290 ITV and ETV titles in addition
to the United Streaming content, this resource is searchable
by standards and subject. There is also a library of photographs
to access for presentations. There is a lot of content for the
study of our state. Detective Bonz and the SC History
Mystery, designed for 3rd grade, and Conversations
with Dr. Walter Edgar, designed for 8th grade, are
both easily accessible in StreamlineSC as well as broadcast
in the ITV schedule. And, programming highlighting the history
and restoration of the State House can be found also!

The content
professionals at the State Department of Education work with
ITV to produce special professional development programs on
a monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly basis. These programs do
NOT offer credit, but are important informational and training
opportunities for educators.
These programs are provided FREE!
For example: Three programs in the Assessment
Information Overview series, coordinated by Dr. Christy
Schneider in SDE’s Office of Assessment, will be block
fed this month and repeat one a month in the ITV schedule. Testing
Task Force Recommendations, Performance Level Descriptors and
NCS Mentor for PACT and HSAP are also streamed in Instant Replay
so educators have continual access to this valuable content.
(NOTE: For complete information on these programs, check the
ITV Update for September 2005, page 30, accessed at www.itv.scetv.org.)

ITV Recertification
Courses
ITV offers
six different three-hour courses (60 points) and 12 different
one-hour courses (20 points) for renewal credit. These are provided
for a nominal fee and video lessons are broadcast in the ITV
schedule or tapes are provided for facilitation of the content.
For example: The twelve one-hour courses are based
on the Annenberg/CPB content, which is excellent. Science
in Focus, The Science of Teaching Science and Essential
Science for Teachers are just three of the offerings that
include courses in the arts, economics, geography, writing and
literature. Teachers can access these easily and only have to
travel to Columbia for the initial face-to-face meeting.

ITV Courses Based on Annenberg Content Can Be Used for
School/District Professional Development
The
ITV recertification courses that ITV developed using the Annenberg
content video lessons have been approved through the State Department
of Education for one-hour credit each or 20 points each. These
12 courses are excellent content that can assist your administrators
in providing FREE professional development for teachers, especially
new teachers.
For a minimal fee, recertification credit is provided through
ITV’s facilitation of each course, but schools have rights
to use the content free of charge by recording the lessons when
they are broadcast. And, ITV will provide one packet of guide
materials free of charge to any principal who requests them
directly or makes their request through their media specialist
to ITV. Then, your school can use these video lessons and materials
for professional development with no cost to the school or district.
At a time when travel expenses are a problem, this could be
valuable to your school.
Four newer courses will be broadcast during October in the ITV
schedule. Check your upcoming October edition of the ITV Update
for “Block Feed Schedule.” However, your local DELC
probably has all these ITV Recertification Course lessons on
tape so please contact them for assistance. Find your local
DELC listing in the back of the ITV Link, the Educator's Guide
to ITV Resouces.
Again, if certificate renewal credit (one-hour credit or 20
points) is desired, participants must register online through
ITV and pay the $35 fee per course. But, if your schools administration
wishes to use these materials for professional development only,
ITV is happy to provide them in the manner described above.
Go the ITV Web site www.itv.myetv.org
to access registration information if credit is desired. Look
for bullet “ITV Recertification Courses.”

McMurray, Program Coordinator in ITV, mcmurray@scetv.org
